The beauty queen who became Trump’s deputy envoy to the Middle East

In September 2022, coinciding with regimes President  visit to the U.S., Ortagus published an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal warning about the dangers of the regime-Russia rapprochement for U.S. interests, blaming Biden’s administration for these circumstances.

She argued that “the increase in military cooperation between regime and Russia is a result of Biden’s administration’s misguided policy to lift the arms embargo against the Iranian government; a policy adopted during Trump’s administration but abandoned when Biden took office.” Ortagus has frequently expressed support for the people’s protests, attributing regimes’s economic and social problems to the policies of the Islamic Republic. She explicitly stated that the U.S. government supports the  people’s struggle for freedom and democracy. In a 2019 press conference, she expressed sorrow over the self-immolation of Sahar Khodayari, who sought the freedom for women to enter sports stadiums.
