Facts about marriage you didn’t know
People whose marriages deteriorate at the time of cancer diagnosis have a shorter lifespan compared to those who were widowed before, had a successful marriage, or never married.
In ancient Greece, Solon (638-558 BC) considered making marriage compulsory. Under Pericles’ rule in Athens (495-429 BC), bachelors were excluded from some public offices. In Sparta, bachelors without children were publicly shamed. In ancient Rome, Augustus (63 BC – 14 AD) wrote laws compelling marriage and imposing heavy penalties on those remaining single.
